Liverpool have joined the race to sign boyhood Chelsea fan Patrick Dorgu, according to Italian media.
The Danish left-back has been one of Serie A’s most promising young players over the past 12 months. Dorgu has starred for Lecce and recently netted his first goal for the senior Denmark national team.
His performances in Italy have not gone unnoticed. On the contrary, the 19-year-old was already being linked with a Premier League move just months after turning up at Lecce, with Tottenham the club most persistently linked with him.
Additionally, the youngster has also been frequently associated with Chelsea and this is a fact that will surely delight him as he grew up supporting the Blues.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that he was on his favourite club’s radar in the summer, but they and all of his other suitors baulked at Lecce’s demands.
A fresh update from Italy now suggests that another one of Chelsea’s fierce rivals has begun taking a keen interest in Dorgu’s development. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Liverpool have joined the race to sign the teenager.
At Anfield, Dorgu would likely serve as Andrew Robertson’s understudy initially, but it is clear that he has the potential to eventually become a starting-calibre player for a side like Liverpool. AC Milan and Napoli are also said to be interested
Whether Dorgu would be willing to make the move to Merseyside is not known, but he did suggest in the past that he would not be averse to joining Premier League clubs not named Chelsea.
“I have been a Chelsea fan for many years, so of course it is clear that [joining them] is a dream,” Dorgu told Flashscore in March. “That’s not to say I can’t switch to other teams in the Premier League, but even if things aren’t going so well for them right now, they are my team.”
