As reported by Tuttosport in today’s print edition, AC Milan is short-staffed in midfield. With Ismael Bennacer sidelined, the only defensive midfielder in the squad is Youssouf Fofana.
The 23-year-old American Johnny Cardoso who currently plays for Real Betis, who was already tracked in the summer, is of interest, but in order to sign him, a non-EU player would have to be sold. Additionally, Betis is unlikely to offer any discounts.
Alternatively, Milan could look at Italian or Italian-trained players, and they will need to see if any opportunities arise that the club deems worth pursuing, while staying true to the idea of developing Italian talent in-house.
In the meantime, Yunus Musah and Kevin Zeroli are being trained to play as defensive midfielders, but it will take more time.
