Gbs: Costacurta recommends new Milan captain….details

Legendary former Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has no doubts as to who the next Rossoneri captain should be after the current incumbent Davide Calabria, as he feels that centre-back Matteo Gabbia is currently ‘the best defender they have’.

Costacurta, who appeared as an analyst on Sky Calcio L’Originale over the weekend, said that Gabbia is the obvious choice to become the next captain of Milan should Calabria leave the club at the end of his contract in June.

Gabbia has recently put pen to paper on a new and improved deal in San Siro, which ties him to the Rossoneri until the summer of 2029.

He has also been one of Milan’s most consistent defenders this calendar year and was rewarded with a first call up to the senior Italy national team in October.

The 25-year-old also lined up as a starter as the Rossoneri got back to winning ways in Serie A with a 3-0 victory over Empoli on Saturday.

“I think Matteo Gabbia’s renewal is the best news today,” Costacurta told Sky.

“He’s the best defender they have, even in his behaviour. When he comes to speak (to the press), he speaks well. I think he should be the captain of Milan, it’s pointless to give it to others. The captain is Gabbia. He’s a boy who comes from the same province as me, grown up in Milanello, so I’m really happy for him.”
