Verstappen confirms Mercedes discussions after they “sat together” and had “constructive” talks – Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula One World Champion, has confirmed long-rumoured talks with Mercedes.
After months of speculation and swirling rumours about his possible move from Red Bull Racing to the Silver Arrows, Verstappen has shed light on the “constructive” talks he has had with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
In his season review, broadcast on Dutch television channel *Viaplay*, Verstappen openly discussed the nature of those talks, while reiterating his loyalty to Red Bull Racing, a team he has described as his “second family”.
The 2024 Formula One season was anything but smooth for Red Bull Racing, despite Verstappen securing his fourth consecutive world championship.
The team faced internal tensions and well-publicised power struggles that overshadowed its dominance on the track. Team principal Christian Horner found himself at the centre of several controversies, including allegations from a close colleague that demanded answers from the Red Bull hierarchy.
Adding to the turmoil, Red Bull’s long-serving technical director and aerodynamics mastermind Adrian Newey left during the season, leaving many to question the stability of the team’s future. These developments have only fuelled speculation about Verstappen’s possible exit.
Mercedes, a team in transition following the departure of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, emerged as the front-runners to secure Verstappen’s services. Wolff made no secret of his admiration for the Dutchman, openly courting him throughout the year.
“We sat together”
Verstappen, who was open about the situation, admitted that discussions with Mercedes did take place.
“The big teams are always interesting, but on the other hand I’m also in a very big team,” said Verstappen, emphasising his continued satisfaction with Red Bull Racing.
He added: “Of course we all talk to each other all the time. And I’m not lying when I say we sat together. They were very constructive discussions. Everyone has always been very honest and open with each other.”
While acknowledging the allure of other teams such as Mercedes, Verstappen stressed the importance of loyalty and comfort in his decision making.
“I’m also very loyal to my team and I just feel comfortable there,” he said.
