Sky: Steelers land fast-rising coach to lead…see more

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back Gerald Alexander, who served as the team’s assistant defensive backs for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, which was first reported by Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network and sources confirmed to PennLive.

Alexander will lead the room that was led for the last four seasons by secondary coach Grady Brown. It is unclear if Brown or assistant defensive backs coach Anthony Midget is returning to the staff.

Brown interviewed for the defensive coordinator position with the Atlanta Falcons earlier this offseason but did not land the job.

Alexander is a fast-rising coach who was the safeties coach for the Las Vegas Raiders a season ago. After Antonio Pierce was fired for Pete Carroll, it appears that Alexander was not retained, but will be a strong hire for the Steelers.

Before that, Alexander was the defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2020 to 2021. He came from the college ranks, where he cut his teeth coaching defensive backs, most notably at California from 2017 to 2019, where he produced three NFL players during that timespan.

A former NFL player, Alexander played in the NFL for six years. He was a second-round pick out of Boise State in the 2007 NFL Draft for the Detroit Lions. He played for the Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets over his six years in the league.
