The 2025 Formula One season is set to usher in a wave of change, the most significant being Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes to join Ferrari. This seismic move left Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff with the crucial task of selecting a replacement for George Russell. Rather than look for an experienced driver, Wolff turned to young talent and selected 18-year-old Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli.
While Antonelli’s signing was seen as a bold gamble, it naturally led to comparisons with Hamilton, who leaves an illustrious legacy at Mercedes. However, Antonelli has made it clear that he does not see himself as Hamilton’s direct successor
With immense expectations on his shoulders, Antonelli steps into the Mercedes seat previously occupied by one of F1’s most decorated champions. The weight of replacing a seven-time world champion would be daunting for any driver, let alone one making his F1 debut. However, Antonelli is determined to make his own way in the sport.
Speaking to GPblog, the young Italian explained his perspective: “I feel like I’m just a new Mercedes driver. Of course, to say that I’m replacing Lewis Hamilton… I don’t think that’s really true. He’s such an important figure in the sport and he’s done so much. I feel like I’m just the next Mercedes driver and I really want to make my way and try to get good results.
By distancing himself from the comparisons, Antonelli aims to focus on his own journey rather than stepping into Hamilton’s shadow. He acknowledges Hamilton’s legacy, but remains determined to make his own mark in the sport.
