The Boston Celtics are reportedly eyeing a strategic move in free agency to bolster their roster, with former Milwaukee Bucks NBA champion P.J. Tucker emerging as a potential target. According to NESN, Tucker could be an ideal fit behind Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis, addressing key gaps in the team’s lineup.
Porzingis, while a dominant interior threat at 7-foot-2, has struggled with durability and physicality. He has played just 29 games this season and hasn’t appeared in more than 70 games since his rookie year. At 240 pounds, his lack of bulk often leaves him at a disadvantage in physical matchups. Enter P.J. Tucker, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound veteran known for his relentless, gritty style of play.
NESN predicts the Celtics could land Tucker if the Toronto Raptors agree to a contract buyout. P.J. Tucker, currently with the Raptors, is not expected to remain with the team. His reputation as a “physical dirt dog” makes him a valuable asset for any contender. “Having a physical dirt dog can’t be underappreciated for any team, especially those in contention of hoisting — or defending — the Larry O’Brien Trophy,” wrote NESN’s Gio Rivera. “Tucker has spent his entire 13-year career building a reputation as a fearless, imposing force that’s willing to go the extra mile.”
P.J. Tucker’s durability is another selling point. He has played all 82 games in a season three times and appeared in 71 and 75 games in 2022 and 2023, respectively. While his recent seasons have been marred by disputes with organizations, his playoff experience is invaluable. “The 39-year-old has accumulated 104 games of playoff experience and was teammates with Celtics guard Jrue Holiday on the 2021 champion Milwaukee Bucks four years ago. He’s averaged 6.6 points and has shot 36.6% from three throughout his career,” Rivera noted.
For the Boston Celtics, Tucker’s physicality and experience could provide the perfect complement to Porzingis. His ability to play a bully-ball style, combined with his three-point shooting, makes him a versatile addition. As Boston aims to defend its championship aspirations, Tucker’s arrival could be the missing piece to solidify their frontcourt.
