Report: Morata admits change in coach led to Milan exit

Alvaro Morata has claimed that he was ‘very happy’ to make the move to Galatasaray, admitting the change in head coach at AC Milan was what prompted the change.

Morata only joined Milan during the most recent summer transfer window but ended up leaving after six months at the club in favour of a switch to Turkey. Ultimately, the Spaniard failed to hit the ground running and concerns grew about his lack of goal return.

The change in head coach to Sergio Conceicao from Paulo Fonseca brought a lot of transfer activity in terms of incomings and outgoings in the winter, and the 32-year-old was no longer deemed a key part of the plans.

Santiago Gimenez arrived from Feyenoord to becoming the new leading striker, and Morata chose Galatasaray. He spoke during an interview with Marca and comments on what has been a bit of a rollercoaster few months for him, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

How is life in Turkey?

“I am very happy. I am living an experience that a priori may be different, but I have met a wonderful country, an incredible club and very nice people. I love the life I have here and I am very happy to have come.”

Circumstances of football. In the end everyone has to think about their own. It’s easy to give an opinion, but if everything goes well, next season I will play in the Champions League and that’s something important for me. I wanted to continue competing at the highest European level, which is not easy.”

At that moment it was what my body and mind were asking of me. There are times when decisions are made at the right time, more or less right, but in the end I think that if I look back I realise that the fans had managed, in a certain sense, to understand me and after the Euro people in Spain no longer saw me in the same way, but these are decisions that you make.

“I went to Milan for Mr. [Fonseca], who showed me that he loved me a lot, but after a few months, a project that seems like one thing becomes another for football itself. In the end I wasn’t so comfortable because I had gone there to be with Fonseca.”
