Sport news: Lakers summer signing idea would land beloved ex-Celtics guard to help Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers always welcome multi-dimensional guards with meaningful playoff experience.

In the summer, the new-look Luka Doncic-led Lakers could explore a deal for a beloved ex-Boston Celtics contributor slated to become a free agent.

Malcolm Brogdon’s ability to play both guard spots and defend multiple positions makes him a valuable asset in free agency,” Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar wrote Wednesday.

“The injury history is a concern, but his efficiency and off-ball skills fit seamlessly on a contender and he is only two seasons away from reaching the Eastern Conference Finals with the Boston Celtics while winning Sixth Man of the Year.”

The Lakers or (Philadelphia) Sixers could use his versatility, while a chance with the Pacers might be on the table if they can make the money work. A mid-level exception deal for 2-3 years seems like the sweet spot for Brogdon, giving him a chance to contribute without breaking the bank.”

Brogdon spent three seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and three with the Indiana Pacers before joining the Celtics in 2022.

Although Brogdon only spent one year with Boston, there’s no question he made it count.

As a relentless on-ball defender who can speed opponents up and make underrated offensive contributions, Brogdon helped the Celtics reach the Eastern Conference Finals under Ime Udoka.

Boston’s championship quest fell short, but Brogdon ended the year with the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, allowing him to remain in good spirits.

During the 2023 offseason, the Celtics traded to the Portland Trail Blazers but only appeared in 39 games before getting shipped to the Washington Wizards the following summer.

The Wizards are arguably the worst team in the NBA, but Brogdon has been solid with the dysfunctional franchise this year, averaging 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game.

Brogdon’s ability to produce on both ends at a serviceable level and behave as a secret weapon off the bench could help give JJ Redick’s crew more backcourt stability.

The Lakers shouldn’t be opposed to signing Brogdon in free agency.
