NFL: Cowboys’ former $57 million receiver comes out of retirement…see more

The official 2025 NFL free agency negotiation window opens on March 10, and the Dallas Cowboys are expected to be more active than last offseason when they mostly stood pat.

But now the Cowboys are featured in the latest NFL headlines for different reasons, thanks to wide receiver Michael Gallup’s abrupt unretirement.

Gallup, who’s still just 29 years old, was officially released from the Raiders’ reserve/retired list on Friday. Now, he’s free to sign with any team he chooses.

Gallup once signed a five-year, $57 million extension with the Cowboys and even recorded a career-high 1,107 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2019. He later signed a one-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency in 2024, but retired before ever playing a down with his new team.

Even though he didn’t play last year, Gallup is technically coming off three consecutive 400-yard seasons. Thus, Gallup has only ever played with the Cowboys in an official NFL game. Yet, that could soon change after he latches on with a team in free agency.

This time around, Gallup should sign a contract at a much lower rate, having to prove himself all over again. However, he’s still at least proven himself capable of playing at a really high level, so it shouldn’t be long before he gets a second chance, whether it’s in Dallas, Vegas, or a new location entirely. For now, he’ll try showing teams he’s serious about a comeback.
