The NFL free agency market has presented a handful of quality quarterbacks who have the ability to make an immediate impact on a franchise.
Two of the biggest names in free agency heading into the offseason were quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, both of which are playing on the latter half of their NFL career.
As the quarterback dominos began to fall, with Sam Darnold and Justin Fields signing deals with new teams, Rodgers and Wilson have been left in the waiting stage.
According to NFL analyst Jeremy Fowler, Rodgers recently met with the Steelers, Wilson’s former team.
The Steelers arranged a meeting with Rodgers during the college football Pro Day period and are reportedly “aggressively pursuing” the 41-year-old quarterback.
“In fact I was told the Steelers wanted to make this meeting happen so much, they skipped Michigan’s Pro Day,” Fowler said. “If you know the Steelers, that’s a big deal. They stood in town to meet with him and look, I checked with a team source that said they’re aggressively pursuing this. He’s No. 1 on their radar.”
The Steelers’ decision to pursue Rodgers leaves Wilson in the dry. He’s fresh off his first season in Pittsburgh, having served as the starter for the 10-8 Wild Card team.
During his lone season with the Steelers, Wilson recorded 16 touchdowns and 2,482 yards with a 63.7 completion percentage.
While Wilson’s stint with the Steelers was relatively successful, in terms of production, it seems Pittsburgh is looking elsewhere.
Rodgers played two seasons for the New York Jets after a long career with the Green Bay Packers. While he suffered an Achilles injury during his first season with the Jets, Rodgers proved he still has gas left in the tank last season.
Before the Jets parted ways with Rodgers, he posted 28 touchdowns and 3,897 yards with a 63.0 completion percentage.
