Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani insists they are trying ‘choose the right people in the right roles’ after Fabio Paratici talks broke down, but Sergio Conceicao is ‘our coach until proven otherwise.’
The match with Fiorentina kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
It has been a strange 48 hours in the Rossoneri camp, because they had seemed to be on the verge of an agreement with Fabio Paratici to be their new director of sport, until the talks suddenly collapsed.
There are reports it was due to concerns the club would be unable to terminate the contract or get guarantees if the civil courts find Paratici guilty of financial irregularities at Juventus, the same that saw him receive a 30-month sporting ban, which is set to expire on July 20.
“I said three days ago that we had not made any decisions on the director of sport, we are in a similar position to three days ago. We are focused on preparing for the season, choosing the right people in the right roles and someone who will be good for Milan,” Furlani told Sky Sport Italia.
“I can tell you the target is someone who can help us to win, so we are more focused on finding the right person than the timing of it.
Is it true that Milan are trying to bring in more Italians for both backroom staff and the coaching position next season?
“I repeat, the important thing is that it’s the right person. Clearly, we are in Italy and the Italian league, so that will be evaluated carefully.
Furlani was asked if the Milan hierarchy next season will be Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Geoffrey Moncada, Furlani, plus a new director of sport?
“It is too early to comment on all these details, so I would avoid doing that right now.”
The CEO was asked what chances, if indeed any, does Sergio Conceicao have of still being the Milan coach next season. His response was far from reassuring.
“Sergio is our coach, we are focused on doing well until the end of the season. Until proven otherwise, he is our coach,” replied Furlani.
This is a showdown for European football, because the Rossoneri go into the weekend in ninth place, four points adrift of the Tuscans.
They were in action on Wednesday with a 1-1 Coppa Italia semi-final draw against Inter, but surprisingly Tammy Abraham gets his third consecutive start, leaving both January signings Santiago Gimenez and Joao Felix on the bench.
