Regardless of who will be appointed, in the coming months the new director will face some priorities, in addition to the choice of the new coach, which will concern the Rossoneri squad and the summer transfer market.
As explained this morning by La Gazzetta dello Sport, one of the first matters on the table for the new sporting director will be the contract renewals of Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez, both expiring in 2026. An agreement with the goalkeeper had been found in recent weeks, but then everything stalled, also due to some disappointing performances by the Frenchman.
As for the full-back, talks for an extension have been on hold for some time and it’s unknown whether they will resume. Both would also be willing to stay, but can the Rossoneri meet their demands after the ups and downs of recent times? Without a renewal, a departure for both in the summer is very likely, although obviously it will depend on the offers that arrive at Casa Milan.
Regarding the squad, the first department to be addressed is certainly the defense. In this sense, for example, it remains to be seen what the future of Kyle Walker will be, who arrived in January on loan from Manchester City: his redemption is anything but guaranteed; in fact, without Champions League qualification, the most likely scenario is a return to England. The central defense department, in particular, will need to be improved. In midfield, the search will be for goal-scoring alternatives to Reijnders, while the attack, barring possible offers, is the department with the most certainties.
