The second leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal tie against Inter Milan and AC Milan has not yet been postponed due to the death of Pope Francis.

The Italian Olympic National Committee (CONI) has released a statement, via FCInterNews. They have confirmed that there is a postponement for all sporting activity today, but not yet made a final decision for the rest of the week.

Pope Francis has died. The head of the Catholic church passed away at the age of 88 after a battle with pneumonia.

The death of the Pope has set Catholics worldwide into mourning.

And considering that Italy remains a strongly Catholic country, it has had a profound effect on day-to-day life in the country. Including within the world of sport.

There had been four Serie A matches scheduled for today.

This was an unusual weekend due to being Easter weekend. Therefore, the league spread the fixtures out over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

However, news of the Pope’s death has changed things.

The Lega Serie A postponed all four matches. As did the lower leagues in Italy.

And CONI has officially confirmed the postponement of all sporting activity today.

As of yet, the status of sporting activities over the rest of the week remains up in the air somewhat.

Inter Milan and AC Milan are set to face in a Coppa Italia semifinal second leg on Wednesday.

So far, CONI have announced that for the rest of the week, there will be a minute of silence before all sporting activities to pay tribute to the Pope.

However, that could change. The Olympic Committee have not yet made a final decision, and could decide to postpone activities for the rest of the week – including the derby semifinal.
