How the derby become a vortex of…see more

Inter had the upper hand against AC Milan for six straight derbies, yet now the script has flipped and it is the red side of the city on top.

La Gazzetta dello Sport recall how one year ago Inter celebrated winning their 20th Scudetto during Milan’s ‘home’ derby. On Wednesday night, however, Hakan Calhanoglu and co. trudged off the field, listening to the opposing half of the stadium cheer.

From April 22, 2024 to April 23, 2025: Milan has turned upside down in 366 days exactly. Same match, same stadium, even the same rain. But a very different outcome: a year ago (and even before) Inter dominated the derbies and came close to the longest winning streak in the history of the fixture.

Today they are licking their wounds and watching the Rossoneri celebrate, increasingly the bête noire of the Nerazzurri. Milan had not won three derbies in a single season since 2004-05, and before that they had only managed to do so in the 1971-72 season. If that’s not a strong signal…

As mentioned, before this season, Inter were coming off six consecutive derby victories. They brought important points in the league, trophies (a 3-0 in the Supercoppa Italiana final) and a Champions League final.

Simone Inzaghi was the dominator of the derbies: he won them all, attacking right from the start, managing to charge his players to the max, tactically reading every move of the Diavolo to perfection. But since Stefano Pioli said goodbye to the Devil, everything has changed.

In a season full of derbies (five to be exact), Simone has not won a single one this year. He was beaten in September against a Paulo Fonseca’s side in disarray, then swept away by Conceiçao in all competitions be it Serie A, Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa.

Saudi Arabia aside, when they were 2-0 up, Inter have never given the impression of being able to control a match against Milan, even when they have drawn twice (in the first leg of the semi-final of the Coppa and in the league).

Wednesday’s 3-0 confirms how Simone Inzaghi has ended up in a ‘vortex of nightmare’ derbies, just like Pioli against him. In exactly one year everything has changed and luckily for Simone there will be no more derbies, but what will the situation be like in 2026?
