In Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron James attempted 14 free throws in the first half, tying his second-most attempts in a playoff half (via Alan Horton of Timberwolves Radio).
James concluded the first half with 22 points, 12 of which came from the free-throw line, along with seven rebounds and three assists. The Lakers trailed 61-58 at halftime, with James’ aggressive play keeping them close.
However, the number of free throws awarded to James sparked reactions on social media: fans accused the NBA of ensuring the Lakers do not go down 3-1.
One fan commented, “Lakers on the verge of going down 3-1 and LeBron gets a career high 14 free throws in the first half. Adam Silver made the call.”
Another remarked, “They ain’t even tryna hide it.”
A third noted, “LeBron James has more free throws in this game than Anthony Edwards has in the entire series. Wolves vs Adam Silver.”
“Literally said this to my wife before the game started,” added one. “Adam Silver will not (let) LeBron lose 1st round.”
“adam silver always making the call smh,” another comment read.
James finished the game with 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer had help from co-star Luka Doncic who added a team-high 38 points. Ultimately, his 18 free-throw attempts were not enough for the Lakers to pull off a road victory, and they trail the series 3-1.
This series shifts to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Wednesday.
