The season of Los Angeles Lakers came to a disappointing end. The Los Angeles franchise, favorite to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs 2025, was eliminated in 5 games (4-1) by the team led by Anthony Edwards.
The T-Wolves exposed all the weaknesses of a roster led by Luka Doncic and LeBron James. With the latter already in his forties, the Lakers know they have to start building around the Slovenian.
The first task is to renew him. According to NBA Rumors, Jovan Buha from The Athletic explains the meticulous plan the Lakers will follow to secure Doncic’s contract extension:
“The Los Angeles Lakers will be willing to structure any contract Luka Doncic desires. The organization completed the trade for Doncic without guarantees of him resigning, although he told ESPN before the playoffs that he wanted to stay with the Lakers,” Buha said.
Starting on August 2, Doncic can sign a four-year, $229 million extension with the Lakers.
He could also opt for a shorter agreement of 3 years and $165 million with a player option for 2029.
There is also a potential 5-year, $418 million contract in 2028 when he reaches 10 years in the NBA.
The Lakers will clear the field this summer so that when the time comes, they can adapt to any of the scenarios mentioned.
