The Los Angeles Lakers’ 2025 playoff run came to an abrupt end with a 4-1 series defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. Despite a promising regular season that saw the Lakers secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, they struggled to find consistency in the postseason.
One player who notably underperformed was Austin Reaves. After a breakout regular season where he averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game on 46% shooting from the field and 37.7% from three-point range, Reaves was considered a strong candidate for Most Improved Player. However, in the playoff series against Minnesota, his production dipped. Reaves averaged 16.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, shooting 41.1% from the field and 31.9% from beyond the arc.
His performance in Games 4 and 5 was particularly concerning, as he struggled to find his rhythm and contribute effectively on both ends of the floor.
It has since been revealed that Reaves was playing through a left big toe sprain during the playoffs, an injury that typically requires 2–4 weeks of recovery. Reaves reportedly “gutted it out” despite the injury, but he wasn’t walking on the affected foot during off days.
Reaves was expected to serve as the third offensive option behind LeBron James and Luka Doncic, providing scoring and playmaking support. However, the combination of his injury and the team’s overall struggles hindered his ability to fulfill that role effectively. The Lakers’ reliance on their star trio was evident, but without consistent contributions from Reaves, the offensive load became too heavy for James and Doncic to bear alone
As the Lakers enter the offseason, they face several pressing questions. James’ future with the team remains uncertain, and the front office must address roster construction issues, particularly in the frontcourt.
For Reaves, a period of rest and rehabilitation will be crucial to ensure he returns to full health. His development remains a bright spot for the franchise, and a healthy Reaves will be integral to the Lakers’ aspirations in the upcoming season.
