Luka Doncic new Lakers contract…see more

Luka Doncic is set to sign a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, potentially earning up to $228.6 million through the 2029-30 season. Though he’s no longer eligible for the supermax deal he could’ve signed with Dallas, Doncic has several options for his future.

As Luka Doncic is set to sign a contract extension with the Lakers, you might wonder how much he could earn in his new deal with LA.

As a 26-year-old, five-time All-Star, and multiple-time All-NBA First Team selection, Luka Doncic has already established himself as one of the league’s most electrifying players.

Currently, he is set to make just under $46 million next season, with a player option worth nearly $49 million for the 2026-27 campaign.

The big question now is what kind of extension he will sign when he becomes eligible on August 2.

Under NBA rules, Doncic is no longer eligible for the five-year, $345.3 million “supermax” extension, a deal he could have received had he stayed with the Dallas Mavericks.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement limits the supermax to players still on their rookie contracts or those traded to another team during that time. Since Doncic’s rookie deal ended in 2022, that option is no longer available.

However, there are still different opportunities for him. Starting August 2, Doncic can sign an extension with the Lakers that starts at 30% of the salary cap with 8% annual raises.

Based on projections, this extension could be worth up to $228.6 million through the 2029-30 season. This would be about $38.1 million less than he could have earned in Dallas and nearly $117 million less than the total value of the supermax deal.

If Doncic prefers, he could play out next season, then opt out of his contract in 2026 to enter free agency, where he could potentially sign a new deal with the Lakers worth $296 million over five years, extending his contract to the 2030-31 season.

However, the best financial move for Doncic would be to sign a 3-year extension this summer with a player option for the 2028-29 campaign.

This strategy would allow him to reach 10 years of service in the league, positioning him to recoup most, if not all, of the lost earnings from missing out on the Supermax this offseason.

If he follows this path, his projected starting salary for the 2028-29 season would be $72 million.

In this case, Doncic would be eligible for a 5-year, $418 million deal with the Lakers that would kick in ahead of the 2028-29 season.

During the regular season, Luka averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game, while in the playoffs, his numbers jumped to 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, despite the Los Angeles Lakers five-game defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
