It has been a strange season for Thiaw with Milan, one where he has had regular starts during certain periods, and then more recently has vanished from the rotations despite the switch to a three-man defence. This had led to speculation about a potential move before 2025-26.
As SportBild write, Christian Falk and Tobias Altschäffl discussed Thiaw in the new episode of the BILD podcast ‘Bayern Insider’. Altschäffl commented: “He actually feels comfortable in Milan, but the Bundesliga, Bayern, yes, if they’re serious. And I think Bayer Leverkusen had their eye on him too.”
Thiaw moved from Schalke to Milan in Serie A in the summer of 2022. He made the jump to the first team in Gelsenkirchen after playing youth football for Borussia Monchengladbach, Düsseldorf, and Leverkusen.
Bayern could face ‘serious competition’ from Bayer Leverkusen for the three-time German international, but that is if he even wants to move. One thing is clear though: Thiaw wants to return to the German national team.
He won the 2021 European Championship with the U21s but now has an eye on being a more regular senior squad member, in view of the 2026 World Cup. The central defender’s current contract runs until summer 2027, but he would likely be available for €25-30m.
This season, Thiaw has made 30 appearances for Milan in all competitions, scoring one goal. Rumours of a possible move to the Bavarians have been circulating since 2023 and he fits what they are looking for perfectly.
The 23-year-old is young, with a lot of potential and experience in German football from his time at Schalke, with whom he won the 2021-22 2. Bundesliga title It remains to be seen whether Bayern will make a serious offer, as well as whether the defender will accept it.
