Pro athletes are often accused of putting money and personal gain above everything else, including even their families. They’re also accused of doing so when they leave college early, and the perception is that most of them never finish their university education and earn a degree.
But Rajon Rondo, the former NBA star point guard who won a world championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, just put a dent in that supposed narrative.
It was announced on social media that Rondo has completed his education at the University of Kentucky and that he received his diploma as an official graduate over the weekend.
He participated in the graduation ceremony that was held at Rupp Arena and crossed the stage to receive his diploma.
Rondo reportedly earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. He had played for the Wildcats from 2004 to 2006 before he was the No. 21 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
He started to make a name for himself when he won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 against, ironically, the Lakers, and nearly won another ring two years later against L.A. After his game went into decline, he signed with the Purple and Gold in 2018, and he was an underrated key off the bench when they won it all in 2020.
Rondo helped speed up the pace, get others involved and even hit outside shots when needed off the bench while with the Lakers. After playing with both the Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2021-22 season, he ended up retiring as a player.
