Player Ratings: Roma 3-1 AC Milan…see more

AC Milan lost the penultimate game of the season as Roma found the back of the net three times. Playing with ten men for most of the game, it wasn’t easy for the Rossoneri and below are the player ratings.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Note: As Milan played more or less the entire game one man down, some of the ratings below are still at an ‘acceptable’ level as the players had to put in a lot of hard work to even stand a chance. The circumstances simply have to be taken into consideration.

Starting XI

Maignan (5.5): He could hardly do anything different on the first goal, and the third was unlucky after the double save, but he definitely should have done more on the second. The wall wasn’t even close to being positioned right and to only have two players in it was strange.

Tomori (5): He was outmuscled by Mancini on the goal, which was obviously very costly, so he can’t be too happy with himself. We did see some good interceptions and blocks too, but on the third goal, he was way out of position and it almost looked like he was jogging back. Booked shortly after.

Gabbia (5.5): Roma didn’t create loads of chances in open play, so the rating might sound harsh, but the Italian did get beaten a few times and had to be bailed out by his teammates.

Pavlovic (6): This is a rating that will divide, I know, but he’s another player who was important after the red card. He managed to win back the ball quite often and always offered support in attack when given the chance, which was needed. It’s not what we need him for generally but in this scenario, it was helpful.

Musah (5.5): Given that he has no issues running up and down the flank for an entire game, he was important from a work-rate point of view after the red card. That being said, he had some poor giveaways and didn’t really add much to the game, never crossing when given the chance for example.

Loftus-Cheek (6): Playing in the centre of midfield, the Englishman was composed to start to finish, often finding the right spaces and combining well with his teammates. He also pushed forward when needed and added an important presence in the defensive midfield battle. In short, a solid display.

Reijnders (6): Like his midfield colleague, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the movement and Milan often sought him as a ‘mid-way point’ of their attacks. He distributed the ball well and we also saw some runs from him, though it was nothing more than solid overall.

Jimenez (6): Soule definitely had the upper hand in the 1v1 battle, as many had predicted, but the Spaniard added so much for Milan when going forward. Especially after the red card, his pace became a real strength of the team as we saw on the equaliser.

Pulisic (7 – MOTM): Compared to the Bologna game, it was like night and day. He showed off his creativity from the start, finding space in between thanks to impressive movement and his usual technical brilliance on the ball. The pass over the top for Jimenez was just lovely and was the only reason Milan even had a chance tonight.

Gimenez (3.5): He had some promising moments at the start of the game, but then came the silly elbow. It was completely unnecessary and in the VAR era, that is always a red card. He put his team in an incredibly difficult spot tonight and for that, his rating suffers a lot.

Joao Felix (6.5): We saw good initiatives on the ball from him, especially in the first half, and he then managed to get the equaliser with a nice finish and positional awareness. He faded a bit in the second half but overall, it certainly wasn’t bad and the goal counts for something.

Substitutes

Fofana (6): The Frenchman perhaps should have come on a bit earlier to direct the play more when Milan had a bit of a possession spell. Still, he should have had an assist with a really nice pass for Leao, and then we saw a few more good ones (for Pulisic, among others).

Leao (4.5): At 2-1, to miss a chance like that (1v1 with the keeper), I have no option but to give him a low rating. Not to mention that he didn’t really add anything to the game overall, despite a couple of opportunities to shine.

Jovic (5.5): A couple of flicks, and a header gone wide (from a decent position actually), but nothing more from the Serbian.

Sottil (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

Terracciano (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.
