Gbs: Cagliari striker not open to back-up role…see more

Roberto Piccoli seems to have dismissed the idea that he might join AC Milan in the summer to become a deputy striker.

Piccoli has had a very positive campaign for a Cagliari side that have largely struggled to score and have been in a relegation battle for most of the season. The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals in Serie A, with five of them headers, one a penalty and all of them inside the area.

He is still owned by Atalanta, but Cagliari have an option to buy him for €12m. Calciomercato.com mention that he may be considered as an option by Milan, who invested in Santiago Gimenez in the winter but may lose both Luka Jovic (expiring deal) and Tammy Abraham (on loan).

Piccoli gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he spoke about the season that he has had but also addressed the rumours that are linking him with the Rossoneri.

You are on loan from Atalanta, the buy-out for Cagliari costs €12m. Do you prefer to always play or be a back-up striker in a big club that plays in Europe?

“A back-up striker, definitely not. I always want to play, with goals. At the end of the season the parties will meet, talk and find an agreement. I would be happy to stay in Cagliari. It’s clear that our football life is a competition in which everyone starts on equal terms and then there are those who win.”
