Gian Piero Gasperini has appeared on AC Milan’s list of head coach options ahead of the summer, and the Italian has sent a warning to Atalanta.
In recent years, there are few coaches who have done better than Gasperini. The Italian has consistently overachieved with his Atalanta team, and this season, they have taken the next step: becoming a title contendor.
Of course, they began to drop off towards the end of the season. However, for at least half of the campaign, there was a real chance they could be involved in the Scudetto finale.
Gasperini has admitted that La Dea would struggle to replicate this season, though, and as a result, he has sent a warning to the club when speaking to ANSA (via Milan News) last night after their final game of the season.
“It will be very difficult to repeat ourselves. A seemingly normal goal like reaching the Champions League is really very complicated, I think. This is what we need to discuss with the club: if we need to stay at these levels, I don’t think I’m capable of guaranteeing it anymore, also because I have the feeling that some important players are leaving.
“This time we have lined up many big teams. I was convinced that we could raise the bar, only Inter, in my opinion, was stronger. I don’t know if lowering the bar will be accepted or not, beyond the contracts, which are the last thing on my mind.
“Kolasinac is injured, Kossounou and Posch are not yet at Atalanta, Scalvini will return after a period of inactivity like Scamacca, then there are some starters who it is not certain will stay. It is enough to be clear: the objectives are not as obvious as they appear.”
