The summer transfer window gives Mikel Arteta the chance to bolster his Arsenal squad as the hunt for silverware continues.
It’s been almost 22 years since Arsenal last won the Premier League, with the delay in delivering the title only emphasised by getting closer to the goal.
Arteta’s side have spent the previous three seasons falling short to the title winners, finishing as the league’s runners-up for three consecutive years.
Sporting director Andrea Berta understands the importance of his task, as this summer, there’s simply no room for error in the transfer market while the Gunners’ competitors are strengthening.
A striker is needed, and fortunately, it appears that Berta is doing work on that front, with Benjamin Sesko a target for Arsenal.
Delivering Sesko is one thing, but bolstering other areas of the attack to go even further is another.
RB Leipzig are aware of Arsenal’s interest in Sesko, and now, the Gunners have the opportunity to test their luck by raiding the German club for another one of their key players.
Xavi Simons has been linked to Arsenal before, and interestingly, the Dutch playmaker is set to be available this summer as he seeks a new challenge away from Leipzig.
As a result, Berta has the chance to deliver not only a clinical goalscorer, but also his playmaking partner to the Emirates, something that wouldn’t just please supporters.
Sesko would be delighted to see Simons accompany him to N5, as when speaking to the Bundesliga’s official website earlier this year, the Slovenian made his admiration for his teammate known.
“It’s nice to see him back on the pitch again,” Sesko said about Simons.
“I love to play with him; he makes things fun. I’m really happy for his two goals because now he is going to have even more confidence.”
If there’s any club that should be roused by the idea of possessing a tantalising striker and creator duo, it’s Arsenal, given two players who largely shaped the Gunners’ recent history.
Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, two elements of Arsene Wenger’s catalyst to Premier League glory.
Comparing Simons and Sesko, who are still in the early days of their careers, to the two Arsenal legends would be naive, but not completely absurd.
As portrayed above, Henry and Bergkamp directly combined to score 20 goals together in their Arsenal career while Sesko and Simons have contributed to nine.
What’s fascinating is the differences in the percentage of joint goal participation between the iconic Arsenal pair and the two transfer targets, as, staggeringly, the latter come out on top.
Arteta could revive the glamour of Henry and Bergkamp at the Emirates by adding Sesko and Simons to his squad, a move that could just earn Berta hero credentials.
There will never be another edition of the Frenchman and Dutchman in N5, but through imitation, the success could be endless.
