Manchester United have already announced Matheus Cunha as a new signing this summer, as Ruben Amorim aims to improve his first-team squad – but news has emerged that youngster Diego Leon is soon to be announced as a youth player at Old Trafford once he makes his way over to Manchester.
Leon was touted as an option earlier in the season, having impressed in his homeland as a teenager with his ‘lightning-quick’ pace and ability to adapt to first-team football at such a young age – with United agreeing a deal with Cerro Porteno to bring the 18-year-old to the club. The report by @SullyTalkz on X (formerly Twitter) states that Leon is set to fly to Manchester within the next 48 hours, where he will be unveiled as a new United player.
Although his medical test and contract signing were completed in January, when he signed a new five-year deal, an official announcement is expected at the start of July for the young Paraguayan. Furthermore, Leon has already made nine appearances for Paraguay’s under-20 team, scoring one goal in the process, and that has been coupled with 14 appearances for his hometown side as they finished second in the Primera Division.
Europa League runners-up United already have young left-back Harry Amass and Danish star Patrick Dorgu at the club, meaning that competition could be rife on the left-hand side of Amorim’s lineup – but Leon’s daring nature going forward will give him gravitas when it comes to adding goals to United’s side.
The Red Devils only scored 44 goals in the Premier League last season, with just Everton and the relegated trio of Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton netting fewer goals in the division throughout the campaign.
It’s unlikely that Leon will have much of an impact next season at such a young age, but his efforts at helping the team to score goals next season could be vital in their aims to finish in the top half at the bare minimum.
