Roma need to raise funds quickly, and Lorenzo Pellegrini has ended up on AC Milan’s list of potential targets, as per a report.
Calciomercato.com speak of a race against time for Roma to save themselves from possible sanctions related to the Settlement Agreement agreed with UEFA in terms of Financial Fair Play. With the farewells of Zalewski and Paredes, the pre-established figure has not yet been reached.
One more big sale or two minor ones will have to be completed by the new sporting director Ricky Massara and the captain Pellegrini has an uncertain future.
Pellegrini on Milan’s radar
Pellegrini is still injured at the moment: on May 15th his quadriceps femoris of the thigh betrayed him for the umpteenth time in his career and, after the MRI scan he underwent, he chose to have surgery to try to solve the problem once and for all.
The prognosis was four months and, therefore, the Italian playmaker will be fit and eligible again after the first international break at the start of the season. Where he will play, however, is another discussion entirely.
His contract with the Giallorossi expires on June 30 2026 and during the last season every negotiation to renew it did not come to fruition. From July 1, he will officially enter the last year of his contract and consequently this will be the last window to potentially cash in on his farewell.
The potential value of the midfielder is high in the minds of the Roma directors, but they do not have much leverage. Where could he go? Napoli wanted him in January, Milan remain vigilant based on outgoings and have an excellent relationship with Roma.
Bologna are mentioned, Inter’s admiration is known, but there are also several clubs abroad (Marseille above all) that have made advances in the past. Pellegrini is focused today only and exclusively on recovering from his injury, but his priority is to stay in the capital.
As for the renewal negotiations, however, he is in no hurry. He knows that this, at 29 years old, will be the last big contract of his career, but he would like Roma to give it to him. He wants to let the pitch do the talking to deserve it, but the market could always upset his plans.
The Rossoneri are looking for a midfielder with end product to help fill the void left by Tijjani Reijnders’ exit, and Pellegrini would also help the Italian quota for the squad list rules.
