Chelsea had to dig deep in their Club World Cup Round of 16 win against Benfica, however one player who played a key role could still be shipped out soon.
The Blues were 1-0 up with just four minutes to go before the players were forced off due to adverse weather conditions.
After a two-hour delay, Enzo Maresca’s side were unable to hold out and conceded, sending the game to extra time.
Chelsea were finally able to put their dominance to good use. Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall set up a quarter-final tie with Palmeiras.
The goal was clearly long overdue from the France international, and the reaction of his teammates showed how much they had wanted him to score an important one again.
However, his future is anything but safe at the club, and his limited minutes in the second half of the season suggest he is not high in the manager’s plans.
According to The Metro, the Blues have offered Arsenal the chance to sign Nkunku this summer. The report goes on to say that Tottenham and Manchester United have also been handed the opportunity to bring him in.
Despite scoring 15 goals for the club so far this season, only three of those came in the Premier League, and this included in a time when both Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu were injured.
With new signings set to join the squad, the future is not looking bright at all for Nkunku.
Around their game at the weekend, Chelsea closed in on two big signings that are set to transform their attack in the coming seasons.
Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro are set to be brought in to Maresca’s squad ahead of the next campaign, with Pedro set to feature at the Club World Cup.
Chelsea already see Pedro as better than Nkunku in terms of how they fit in at the club, and he is likely to take his place in the first team squad going forwards.
