Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has joined Mexican team Club Universidad Nacional, widely known as Pumas UNAM.

The Wales captain joins the Mexico City club on a one-year deal, making history as the first prominent British player in Mexico’s top flight.

In 2023, Ramsey returned to Cardiff and took on the role of interim manager for the final three matches of the 2024-25 Championship season following the dismissal of Omer Riza.

Although Cardiff were relegated to League One, the 34-year-old was considered for the permanent manager position and held discussions with the club’s leadership.

However, Ramsey expressed his desire to continue playing and aims to lead Wales at the 2026 World Cup next summer.

Ramsey posted on social media that he had left League One-side Cardiff with “a lot of different emotions”.

“For now I am on a new adventure but I will be keeping a close eye on the club as always and it will forever have my support,” he posted.

Pumas said in a statement on X: “Welcome to Pumas, Aaron Ramsey. Your name has shone on the world’s biggest stages.

“Wales national team. Captain and emblem of his national team. And right now, your talent and passion wear blue and gold.

“Here we don’t just defend a crest, we represent the highest educational institution.

“This is your new home. Welcome to Ciudad Universitaria, welcome to Pumas.”

Ramsey started his career at his hometown club Cardiff before moving to Arsenal in 2008, where he spent 11 years. He later had stints with Juventus, Rangers, and Nice.

The 34-year-old also shares the same agent as Pumas manager Efrain Juarez.
