Arsenal academy graduate Remy Mitchell appears to have re-signed for the club, taking part in the academy photocall earlier this week.
Last week, we covered the news that former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Remy Mitchell was back training with the club, taking part in a session with the u18s as they returned for pre-season.
At the time, there was no certainty that Mitchell’s return was anything more than a training exercise for him, particularly given he’s 21 years old and therefore wouldn’t usually be part of an u18 squad.
Yet Jeorge Bird of Arsenal Youth highlights that Mitchell has since taken part in Arsenal’s academy photocall, and he’s been allocated the squad number 47.
One explanation for Arsenal potentially re-signing Mitchell is that he’s still currently classified as an u21 player. That means he wouldn’t take up a senior squad spot, but could still be used if needed.
Perhaps that would allow Arsenal a little more freedom to loan out their other young goalkeepers, like Karl Hein, Tommy Setford, and Lucas Nygaard.
Realistically, David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga are likely to share all the significant minutes for Arsenal this season. But the Gunners take at least three goalkeepers to almost all of their matches, partly as a precaution and partly to give the first-choice goalkeepers someone to warm up with.
Mitchell spent most of the 2024/25 campaign playing for Haringey Borough in the Isthmian League North Division, the eighth tier of English football.
The goalkeeper went on loan to Aylesbury United last November, playing three matches as cover for the suspended Jack Hopwood. But after that spell was up, the youngster returned to Haringey for the remainder of the season.
Outside of his playing career, Mitchell has remained an Arsenal fan, attending both legs of the Gunners’ Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid and cheering his old team on from the stands.
