Report: AC Milan, Barcelona in transfer tussle to sign Darwin Nunez

AC Milan and Barcelona will reportedly compete with Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr to sign 25-year-old Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Caught Offside, AC Milan and Barcelona are interested in Darwin Nunez. The two European bigwigs are scouring the market for a striker this summer, with the Rossoneri desiring more competition for Santiago Gimenez’s spot and Barcelona looking for a backup for Robert Lewandowski.

However, AC Milan and Barcelona are in a four-way battle for Nunez’s signature, with Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr also vying for his signature. Meanwhile, Liverpool will demand around €70 million to part ways with the South American attacker, even though the price tag has driven Napoli away after prolonged negotiations.

Darwin Nunez has blown hot and cold since joining Liverpool from SL Benfica in a big-money move in July 2022. While the 25-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in the last three years, he has been a frustrating figure for Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot due to his bouts of inconsistency.

The struggles accentuated in the 2024/25 season, with Nunez managing only 2,038 minutes of game time across 47 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with seven goals and seven assists. However, Nunez’s stock in the market remains high, with AC Milan and Barcelona among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

AC Milan’s interest in Darwin Nunez makes sense. The Serie A giants are eager to bolster their offensive unit by signing a striker this summer after Tammy Abraham’s loan stint ended. In addition, Santiago Gimenez has yet to hit the ground running at San Siro. Several candidates, including Rasmus Hojlund, have emerged on AC Milan’s radar, with Nunez also a viable target.

As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants hold a long-standing interest in the Liverpool striker. While Robert Lewandowski remains one of the best strikers in La Liga, he is in the twilight of his career. So, signing a versatile attacker like Nunez will make sense. However, Liverpool’s asking price of €70 million may not be suitable for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Uruguayan international is also a target for Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, and recent reports have claimed that Saudi outfits will likely meet Liverpool’s price. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the €70 million-rated striker.
