MN: Pulisic on his Milan improvements, new role under Allegri and Leao doubters… see more

Christian Pulisic admits he improved his decision-making at Milan and is happy to play on the left wing under Massimiliano Allegri, but doesn’t understand Rafael Leao’s doubters: ‘He’s a top, top, top talent.’

USMNT star Pulisic released an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, discussing Milan’s results and performances during the pre-season.

The Rossoneri lost 1-0 against Arsenal last week, but beat defending Premier League champions Liverpool 4-2.

We put in a good performance in both games. We were solid, especially in the first half. We defended well and created some attacking chances,” Pulisic said.

“At this point in the season, I think it’s essential to face strong teams and, as a start, we can be satisfied.”

How about the new Milan coach, Allegri?

“He’s made the right start. He’s a coach who managed many great players,” said the American star.

“He knows how to talk to the team and create the right connection with the squad. He’s focusing on giving Milan strong defensive unity, which is essential to then create the chances to score.

With Rafael Leao playing as a centre forward in the opening pre-season friendlies, Pulisic played again as a left winger.

“I love playing in all positions, including this one,” he said.

“I’ve already played there in the past, in a similar formation, and starting from the left is surely not a problem.

Pulisic scored 17 goals last season, more than he managed in three seasons at Chelsea, 15.

“I’ve been given freedom here at Milan and I feel the trust everyone has in me, from my teammates to the coach, the management and the fans,” Pulisic noted.

“The club gave me a great opportunity by signing me, and I must improve every year, work hard and keep stepping up my performance. If things are going well, it’s no surprise, given what I do during the season and in pre-season, as I give everything I can.”

Pulisic has already scored 32 goals in two seasons at Milan. Does he feel more at ease at San Siro than at Stamford Bridge?

“That’s right even if it’s easier to say so after scoring a lot over the past two seasons,” he admitted.

“I’m really enjoying myself in Milan and I want to continue this way.

“I think Serie A is a very physical and tough league. Since arriving in Italy, I’ve improved at making decisions on how to finish off plays,” Pulisic continued.

I mean, choosing between taking a shot and making the final pass. For an attacking player like me, these are key aspects.

Will he miss playing in the Champions League this season?

“Yes, because it’s where we want to be. Our goal is to qualify for the next season. The Champions League is the most exciting European competition, and Milan deserve to be in it.”

Leao is having a great pre-season, but Pulisic is not surprised.

“I don’t understand why people keep doubting his potential,” the American concluded.

“We know what he’s capable of and, seeing him score like he did on Saturday against Liverpool, after a great burst of speed, didn’t surprise us. To me, he’s a top, top, top talent. Like the rest of the team, he just needs to find consistency, and then he’ll be more and more decisive.”
