Real Madrid forward Rodrygo could be set for a sensational transfer to the Premier League, with Manchester City and Arsenal linked with the Brazilian.
City have progressed with exits for Jack Grealish and James McAtee, while Savinho is a target for Tottenham and could also leave before the transfer window closes.
New reports say City could move for Rodrygo if those three exits materialise, with Real Madrid said to be seeking as much as £100m for the attacker.
Arsenal are also linked with a late move for Rodrygo in a bid to boost their front line after adding Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke to their attack already this summer.
As Premier League clubs circle over a potential move for Rodrygo, Liverpool do not seem to be in the market for another winger having already got Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz in their squad.
Alexander Isak could yet end up at Anfield despite Liverpool walking away from talks, so it seems Rodrygo is not on Arne Slot’s shopping list at present. But they have previously held an interest in the winger, as he revealed last year.
Rodrygo signed for Real Madrid in 2018 from Santos for a reported £39.5m, joining a year later. Last year he said there was previously an offer in 2017 to join Liverpool for a bargain price of around £2.5m.
He said (via Goal): “We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career.”
After turning down the Liverpool option when he was 16, Rodrygo spent a valuable two-year spell at Santos before joining Real Madrid. At the Bernabeu, he has 68 goals in 270 appearances, winning 13 major trophies including two Champions League titles.
“I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football,” he continued. “It had always been my dream to play in Europe.
“Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”
History could have turned out a lot differently for both Rodrygo and for Liverpool had the move gone through. Now, he could be set to rival Liverpool in the Premier League if a move can be agreed in the coming weeks.
