Arsenal fans were hoping to see another attacking signing arrive before the summer transfer deadline, but that no longer seems likely.
Mikel Arteta is looking to finally bring the Premier League title to Arsenal after three third-place finishes in a row.
The Gunners have come agonisingly close to Premier League glory in recent years, but top spot continues to evade Arteta.
This summer has been a big one, with Arsenal snapping up Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting as Arteta’s new goalscoring star.
The Swede didn’t score against Manchester United on Sunday, but Gary Neville defended Gyokeres for his display at Old Trafford.
Arsenal also signed Noni Madueke this summer, completing a much-scrutinised raid on Chelsea for the England wide man.
Gunners fans will have expected one more attacking signing, but that seemingly won’t be happening this summer.
The Athletic have stunned Arsenal fans by reporting that Leandro Trossard is set to sign new terms at the Emirates Stadium.
The terms of the deal have confused many, as it’s suggested that Trossard is being given a pay rise at Arsenal, but isn’t extending his contract.
TBR Football understand that Inter Milan were interested in Trossard, but the Belgian is now staying in North London.
The 30-year-old started 28 Premier League games last season, but many Arsenal fans were expecting Trossard to go this summer.
Interest from elsewhere left supporters believing that Arsenal would cash in and reinvest in a younger winger, but Trossard’s pay rise suggests he is staying put and will compete with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Madueke.
Arsenal fans have taken to social media to react, and one theme was common throughout – the belief that the transfer window is now over for the Gunners.
Some may have held out some hope that Arsenal would move for Eberechi Eze or Real Madrid’s Rodrigo before the transfer deadline.
Trossard’s new deal seemingly rules out that prospect, leaving supporters disappointed in the process…
- Oh, so our window is officially shut and closed. That’s really really really disappointing.
- And with that Trossard news, our window is officially CLOSED.
- Window closed, don’t bother dreaming
- Transfer window officially closed for the summer.
- Window has closed for us
- Our window is closed. And we’ve made it even harder to sell Trossard in the future because of his increased wages
- New Trossard deal. Window is closed. No Eze, no LW.
- It’s safe to say our transfer window is closed, cheers man
- The window is closed then, y’all can stop dreaming
- Our window now seems to be already closed, and thanks Berta for how you destroyed my dream and ambition after all you tried to give me hopes
Trossard is seemingly happy with his new contract, but his role at Arsenal still looks to be a little uncertain.
The Belgian forward is predominantly a left-sided winger, but Martinelli started the season there against United, and Madueke then replaced him.
Trossard was an unused substitute as he continues to battle back after suffering an injury during pre-season.
Arteta may yet view Trossard as the third-choice left-sided winger as well as the third-choice striker behind Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.
Trossard may value the stability of staying at Arsenal, especially in a World Cup year, but he is in danger of being stuck down the pecking order.
