Michael Owen critical of Liverpool duo against Brighton

Van Dijk and Alisson Becker v Brighton

Michael Owen was critical of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker for the manner in which Liverpool conceded their opening goal against Brighton.

Just like Liverpool have done already this season, they proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot after 20 minutes when they gifted the home side with a goal.

Virgil van Dijk tried to pass the ball out from the back, with his forward ball to Alexis Mac Allister being dispossessed and pounced on before the ball was put into the back of the net.

Not only did Michael Owen feel that Virgil van Dijk was at fault for that goal, but also goalkeeper Alisson Becker, as he questioned if he ‘gets his angles wrong’, as he told Premier League Productions (08/10/23 at 2:55 pm).

In the end, it proved to be a costly mistake from Jurgen Klopp’s side because they only walked away with a point from the Amex Stadium.

Conceding that first goal and conceding when trying to pass out from the back is an itch the players will be very desperate to get rid of.

“Virgil van Dijk here, he is probably at fault,” said Owen. “Then I think Alisson can do a little bit better. Maybe gets his angles wrong.

“We thought that van Dijk had better options. Maybe three or four better options – I don’t know why he decides to go inside.”

Mohamed Salah was at it again, this time scoring a brace to take his goal contributions for the Premier League season so far to nine.

Only against Tottenham did Salah fail to score or assist this season, and that was with ten men for large parts and then nine.

It’s an incredible run of form he is on and, along with the midfield players and Alisson in between the sticks, there is no reason why the team can’t challenge for the Premier League title.
