Manchester United defender Gabby George has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The 26-year-old was forced off nine minutes into her side’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.
She fell to the turf after chasing a loose ball and was carried off the pitch by two members of staff.
George will undergo surgery and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
Speaking at full time, manager Marc Skinner said: “I wouldn’t imagine it looks good.
“We will look after Gabby. It didn’t look like a good one. I hope she is okay.”
It is the second time the defender has sustained an injury of such nature, after rupturing her ACL in an FA Cup fixture with Everton in February 2020 and subsequently being sidelined for 12 months.
George joined United from Everton on deadline day this summer after her release clause was triggered in a move that saw her return to the club she represented at youth level.
She has featured four times in all competitions for United this season.
Fellow summer signing Emma Watson also sustained an ACL injury this season while on international duty with Scotland in September.
United are next in action in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday before facing George’s former side Everton in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
