The pair have endured a few verbal bust-ups in the dugout in games between Arteta’s Arsenal and Klopp’s Liverpool in the past.
The pair have met regularly in the Premier League and domestic cup competitions, with Arteta having faced no manager more frequently than the Reds boss.

Arteta and his Arsenal side took advantage of a Liverpool team that were perhaps still a little hungover after being crowned Premier League champions back in the Spaniard’s first meeting with Klopp.
In the third to last game of the 2019/20 season, with the Reds having already ended their 30-year wait for a league title, Arsenal earned all three points in front of an empty Emirates Stadium in the midst of the pandemic.
Liverpool had taken the lead through Sadio Mane, but a rare Virgil van Dijk error gifted Alexandre Lacazette an equaliser. Reiss Nelson then completed the turnaround just before the break, with the Reds slumping to just their third defeat of the season.
2. Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool – 5-4 on pens (29/08/2020)
It took a little over a month for Arteta and Klopp to clash for a second time, this time in the Community Shield. Arsenal had won the FA Cup and Liverpool the Premier League, but it was the Gunners who lifted another piece of silverware at Wembley.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had given Arsenal an early lead in the capital, but Takumi Minamino’s well-taken second-half strike sent the game to penalties.
Just one man failed to find the back of the net from the spot, that being Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster who smashed his penalty off the crossbar. It was the cool-headed Aubameyang who popped up with the winning kick following Brewster’s miss.
3. Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal (28/09/2020)
A third meeting in the space of two-and-a-half months between Liverpool and Arsenal brought Klopp’s first victory against Arteta. The third game of the new league season, the Merseyside club ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield.
Andy Robertson’s miscued clearance had helped Lacazette to another goal against the Reds after 25 minutes, but Mane responded with an equaliser just three minutes later.
Robertson then turned from villain to hero, meeting a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross to complete the comeback before half-time. With only one goal between the sides and Klopp’s nerves jangling, Diogo Jota netted his first goal for the club to secure the victory with two minutes to play.
4. Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal – 4-5 on pens (01/10/2020)
Arsenal certainly proved they had the beating of Liverpool when it came to penalties in 2020, the Gunners winning another shootout with the Reds in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
After a goalless draw, missed penalties from Divock Origi and Harry Wilson proved costly for Klopp, with Joe Willock firing home the winning spot-kick for Arteta’s side.
5. Arsenal 0-3 Liverpool (03/04/2021)
Neither side was enjoying a particularly fruitful campaign when Liverpool travelled to Arsenal late in the season, but Liverpool proved that form is temporary and class is permanent in north London.
As they chased down a top four place after a shocking title defence, they knew they needed a victory at Arsenal to boost their chances of reaching the Champions League places.
It was Jota who proved the thorn in Arsenal’s side once again, scoring a brace either side of Mohamed Salah’s strike to give Liverpool a commanding 3-0 victory at the Emirates.
6. Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal (20/11/2021)
It was another humbling for Arsenal at the hands of Liverpool but it was Arteta who lit the touch-paper at Anfield. Having largely contained the Reds for the opening half-an-hour, a touchline bust-up between Klopp and Arteta instigated by the Gunners boss sparked Anfield into life.
A flat Liverpool were swiftly energised by the atmosphere inside the stadium and Mane’s header gave the hosts the lead heading into half-time.
Another goal for Jota against Arsenal doubled Liverpool’s advantage following Nuno Tavares’ poor pass, with quickfire goals from Salah and Minamino finishing Arteta’s side off.
7. Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal (13/01/2022)
Arsenal’s next meeting with Liverpool came in the Carabao up semi-final first leg at Anfield. Despite the game finishing goalless, Granit Xhaka ensured there was still plenty of drama on Merseyside.
The Swiss midfielder hauled down Jota in the first half as the Liverpool forward raced through on goal, receiving a straight red card for his professional foul.
Despite being down to ten men for 65 minutes, Arteta’s Arsenal managed to hold firm to take a draw into the second leg.
8. Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool (20/01/2022)
Guess who proved to be Arsenal’s Achilles’ heel yet again? That’s right, Jota.
The Portuguese was in inspired form at the Emirates, opening the scoring with a nice run and finish in the first half. Jota grabbed his double in the second half, taking down Alexander-Arnold’s delightful lofted through ball before firing beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, going on to beat Chelsea on penalties to lift the trophy.
9. Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool (16/03/2022)
Two months later, it was the same story at the Emirates for Arsenal, this time in the Premier League.
Despite a cagey first half and Martin Odegaard missing a wonderful opportunity early in the second, it was Liverpool who would strike first. Unsurprisingly it was Jota, although Ramsdale was beaten too easily at his near post.
The next was supplied by another man who enjoyed a goal against the Gunners, Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian met Robertson’s cross to guide the Reds to a big win in north London.
10. Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool (09/10/2022)
With roles reversed and Arsenal battling Manchester City for the Premier League title instead of Liverpool, the Gunners rose to the occasion when the Reds visited north London during the 2022/23 season.
It took Arsenal just a minute to find the lead, Gabriel Martinelli converting after some woeful Liverpool defending. Darwin Nunez did pull one back for the visitors, but Bukayo Saka would restore the Gunners’ lead in first-half stoppage-time, polishing off a quick counter-attack.
Liverpool responded again through Firmino’s nice finish, but Thiago’s foul inside the penalty area gave Saka the opportunity to win it for Arsenal from the spot – which he did.
11. Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal (09/04/2023
With Arsenal still hunting down the league title, Arteta’s side surrendered a two-goal lead at Anfield to dent their hopes of being crowned champions.
It looked so simple for Arsenal in the early stages, Martinelli firing the visitors in front after eight minutes before Gabriel Jesus headed home a second. The hot-headed Xhaka took inspiration from his coach several seasons ago, sparking the Anfield crowd into life after an altercation with Alexander-Arnold.
Salah managed to reduce the deficit in front of a buoyant crowd before half-time, but then missed a second-half penalty as Arsenal looked set for a vital three points.
However, up stepped Firmino with a late far-post header to level proceedings, with Ibrahima Konate inexplicably missing from three yards out as Arsenal breathed a huge sigh of relief in the dying embers at Anfield.
