Joe Gomez, starting at left defence, is eager to score his first goal for Liverpool.

Joe Gomez vowed to continue giving all he's got to help Liverpool lift silverware this season, regardless of the position he plays in.

The 26-year-old has deputised brilliantly at left-back in the Reds’ last four fixtures, with Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas both currently absent due to injury.

Gomez admits to some unfamiliarity with the role but insists he’s just happy to serve Jürgen Klopp in any way possible.

“It’s different at left-back,” the No.2 said. “It’s been a challenge to adapt. Small, minor differences that maybe aren’t noted – maybe how you receive the ball and so on. But people at the club know me now, they know I will give my all.

“I’ve been here long enough now but I’m grateful to play for the club. Attack each game, dig in as a team and try to do what we can do as a collective. We have some injuries but we will keep persevering.”

Gomez is Liverpool’s current longest-serving player and can make his 200th appearance on Wednesday night when Fulham visit Anfield for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

However, the defender is still waiting to open his goalscoring account for the club, despite coming close on a number of occasions.

“I’ve gone eight years and now everyone is talking about it, I don’t know what sparked it!” he laughed. “I want to affect the game when I’m forward as well and be positive.

“Hopefully it comes, we’ll see how I celebrate. I’ll leave taking my shirt off to Mo!”

Gomez delivered another assured display as the Reds defeated Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

He and his teammates remain in the hunt for all four competitions they entered this term, though the focus is solely on the next test ahead.

Gomez continued: “We don’t want to get giddy. We’re all just full of desire and want to make the best out of the season. All we can do is take it one game at a time – I know it’s a cliché.

“But there’s desire and we have a platform to build on. We can’t take that for granted. As we know with last season, it’s not always plain-sailing and we went through rough patches but we built from it and learnt from it. So we have to keep at it [and] see where it takes us.

“There’s definitely a good bond in the team. There’s a freshness and fire about the team.

“We’re not over-analysing who we lost and who we don’t have. We’ve got top players who we’ve missed this year – Thiago, Robertson, Kostas, Mo going [to the Africa Cup of Nations].

“But the gaffer keeps reiterating we can all do a job defensively and we can all defend, [and it] means we don’t have to worry about who’s missing.

“We have to keep that mentality. It’s still early and there’s a long way to go but we can only take one at a time.”
