Jürgen Klopp has been no stranger to dipping into the January transfer market during his Liverpool tenure but has so far resisted temptation this month. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz have all arrived in the winter window and boosted Liverpool in the second half of seasons in recent years.
With the Reds still fighting on four fronts, both domestically and in Europe, some fresh faces through the door could make all the difference in the quest for silverware. Liverpool has had to deal with a host of injuries throughout this campaign too, most notably in defense, where Trent Alexander-Arnold has recently joined Andy Robertson on the sidelines.
The England right-back is only expected to be out for a couple of weeks but with Joe Gomez being forced to deputise on the left, Klopp is short of options right now. And with Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endō currently on international leave, the Liverpool boss cannot afford to lose anyone else.
It remains to be seen if the Reds do make any moves before the window shuts on February 1 as speculation over potential incomings continues. Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the latest transfer gossip around Anfield today.
Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa)
Liverpool is ready to challenge Arsenal in the chase for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, reports Football Insider. Luiz was on the Gunners’ radar in the summer but he stayed put and is enjoying a fine season at Villa Park.
The Brazilian, 25, still has another two years remaining on his current contract and Villa would expect him to stay if it does qualify for the Champions League under Unai Emery. They are likely to demand $127m (£100m/€116m) for the midfielder in any potential negotiations.
Liverpool signed four midfielders last summer in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endō and Ryan Gravenberch so it may not be a priority position but tabs are reportedly being kept on the situation. Barcelona is also said to be keen on Luiz as the Spanish club plots a rebuild of its own.
Leny Yoro (Lille)
Liverpool and Manchester City are in a ‘more advanced’ position to sign Lille wonderkid Leny Yoro compared to PSG, according to the French outlet Le10Sport. Yoro is out of contract in 2025 but the Ligue 1 side is currently demanding $98m (£78m/€90m) for him.
Lille has fielded Yoro 16 times this season and has kept 10 clean sheets. The 18-year-old has been compared to Raphaël Varane and appears to have a very high ceiling for the future. Amid Liverpool’s search for another long-term option at center-back, he could, while being very expensive, be someone to watch out for.
