Tim Sherwood has lifted the lid on what Diogo Jota told Michael Edwards when he arrived at Liverpool. The former Wolves striker went a year without scoring not that long ago but is right back in top form now.

Jota has been in superb form since returning from injury. The Portuguese international added another two goals to his tally, as well as an assist, during the 4-0 win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

His performance led former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher to suggest Jota is one of the club’s greatest-ever finishers. The Sky Sports pundit even claimed he was better than Michael Owen, Fernando Torres, Luis Suárez and Robbie Fowler.

And the praise hasn’t stopped there for Jota, with ex-Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Sherwood also lauding his recent performances. Sherwood also revealed a conversation he had with Liverpool’s former sporting director about the 27-year-old.

“Jota has been an unbelievable signing for them,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions. “I remember speaking to Michael Edwards about him and he spoke to Jota to bring him from Wolves and he told him that I’m not playing second-fiddle, he wanted to be the main man and he’s turning into that now.”

Jota’s return has come at the perfect time for Jürgen Klopp, with Mohamed Salah away on international duty for the Africa Cup of Nations, where he has picked up an injury and is expected to return to Merseyside. The Portuguese has 11 goals and four assists from 22 appearances so far this season, including six goal involvements in his last three Premier League outings.
