The 22-year-old is enjoying the best season of his short career, having been transformed by Eddie Howe since his move to Newcastle United.
Anthony Gordon has been a Magpie for a full year now, and he has massively kicked on after a slow start. It was tough to begin with, but now Gordon is a difference maker in black and white.
The winger is one of Newcastle’s most decisive players in the final third, adding goals and assists to his game at an alarming rate. He has got 15 goal contributions in all competitions, 14 of which have came in the Premier League.
Two of his seven goals came in 1-0 wins for Newcastle, proving how impactful he is now becoming.
But there is still more to come, which is why Gordon continues to look at ways in which he can improve his game. He does that by studying his peers, one of which is Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
During an appearance on TNT Sports’ Between The Lines, Gordon was asked by Rio Ferdinand if he studies any players for inspiration to try and increase the amount of goals he scores.
“I watch Salah a lot,” he said.
“Numbers-wise, the positions he takes up, the runs in behind – he’s unbelievable. He’s probably the best player in the world for me because he has so much impact on the game.”
Newcastle star is learning from the best
Gordon is picking the perfect player to study. When it comes to wide players scoring goals and getting assists, there might not be anyone better than Mo Salah.
The Liverpool superstar is one of the most impactful players around, as Newcastle have found out for themselves time and time again. It was earlier this month that he scored twice and got an assist in a 4-2 win over the Magpies.
Salah’s numbers are crazy. This season he has got 27 goal contributions already. Last season he got 46.
During his entire Liverpool career, he averages almost a goal or an assist every game. He has played 332 times, boasting 204 goals and 88 assists.
That is why Gordon is studying Salah, and it is starting to pay off. He is nowhere near the 31-year-old’s level, but that will be his aim. Gordon wants to be the best, and there is so much more to come from him in a Newcastle United shirt.
