In addition to more Michigan Wolverines news, the Ohio State athletic director argues that Michigan football’s winning streak over Ohio State ought to be marked with a “asterisk.”
It simply isn’t acceptable to Ohio State fans that Michigan football has dominated the Buckeyes for the last three seasons. When Ryan Day claimed, prior to Ohio State’s spring game, that the Buckeyes were “one play away” from accomplishing all of their goals the previous few seasons, it was further evidence that he doesn’t live in reality. That’s a funny statement, all right. In 2023, Ohio State has one play left to defeat Michigan. The fact that Jim Harbaugh was suspended without cause, giving Ohio State an unfair advantage, is the only asterisk that should be placed next to that game.
Football for Michigan never trailed and still won. But when Anna Staver questioned AD Gene Smith, who was a guest on WOSU’s All Sides with her, if the Wolverines’ three-game losing skid “deserves a little bit of an asterisk since for at least two of those years, it appears they were cheating,” Smith replied that it did. Of course I do, Smith replied. The concepts of fair play and maintaining the integrity of the game are undermined by breaking the rules, which are put in place to try and achieve just that. Therefore, we must maintain perspective on it. Once more, Michigan football was the underdog in 2023. The sign gate thing was public knowledge so the Wolverines didn’t have any signs or advantages.
There is also zero proof that Michigan “cheated” in any other win over OSU. Connor Stalions wasn’t even on the coaching staff in 2021. I guess that’s why Staver said the Michigan Wolverines cheated in two games.
However, it has been reported and documented that Ohio State stole Michigan’s signals in 2022 and traded Michigan’s signals with other Big Ten teams. The Buckeyes gave Purdue Michigan’s signals after the Wolverines beat them for the Boilermakers to use in the Big Ten title game.
So both teams had each other’s signals in 2022. ‘The Game’ was played on a level playing field and Michigan football won by 22, outscoring Ohio State 28-3 in the second half.
Michigan football won that game by 22. The Wolverines won last season by six and never trailed. If Jim Harbaugh was on the sidelines, the best head coach in college football at the time, Michigan football probably wins by even more.
The tears are hilarious though. They also make the national championship and the 3-0 mark to end Jim Harbaugh’s career taste even sweeter.
