The American League will start right-hander Corbin Burnes, 29, against Pittsburgh youngster Paul Skenes on Tuesday night in the All-Star Game. With a 9-4 record and a 2.93 ERA in his debut season with the Orioles, Burnes has had a fantastic season. Shortly before spring training began, he was acquired from Milwaukee. Burnes is making his fourth All-Star appearance in a row as the 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner. His All-Star Game start will make him the fifth pitcher from the Orioles to do so, and the first since Steve Stone in 1980.

Skenes, who debuted in the majors on May 11, has impressed with a 6-0 record and a 1.90 ERA in 11 starts. The 21-year-old right-hander has struck out 89 batters and walked only 13 in 66 1/3 innings. Skenes will have the fewest starts for an All-Star pitcher and joins a select group of rookies to start the All-Star Game, including Dave Stenhouse (1962), Mark Fidrych (1976), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), and Hideo Nomo (1995).

NL manager Torey Lovullo announced last week that Skenes would start for the National League.

AL manager Bruce Bochy, of the World Series champion Texas team, revealed his lineup for the game on Monday. Steven Kwan of Cleveland will lead off and play left field, followed by Gunnar Henderson at shortstop, Juan Soto in right field, Aaron Judge in center field, Yordan Alvarez as the designated hitter, José Ramírez at shortstop, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base, Adley Rutschman catching, and Marcus Semien at second base.

For the NL, Ketel Marte will bat first and play second base, followed by Shohei Ohtani as the designated hitter, Trea Turner at shortstop, Bryce Harper at first base, William Contreras catching, Christian Yelich in right field, Alec Bohm at third base, Teoscar Hernández in center field, and Jurickson Profar in left field.
