Former Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy has officially inked a deal with the Minnesota Vikings, solidifying his place as their next franchise quarterback. McCarthy signed a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $21.85 million, which includes a $12.7 million signing bonus and a fifth-year option, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Vikings’ decision to trade up and select McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft underscored their determination to bring in the Michigan star. This move was anticipated, as Minnesota had been closely linked with McCarthy before the draft and conducted a private workout with him.
Minnesota’s trade was a minor shift from No. 11 to No. 10, a strategic move given the early selection of quarterbacks Caleb Williams (No. 1), Jayden Daniels (No. 2), Drake Maye (No. 3) and Michael Penix Jr. (No. 8).
McCarthy led the Wolverines to the National Championship, showcasing his talents in an exceptional final season. McCarthy shined despite questions about his ceiling, largely due to Jim Harbaugh’s offense relying heavily on a robust defense and running attack. He completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions, while also contributing 202 yards and three touchdowns rushing.
McCarthy’s knack for avoiding critical turnovers complemented Michigan’s team dynamic perfectly, and this skillset is expected to translate well to the NFL. In Minnesota, McCarthy is surrounded by a talented cast, including Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones.
As McCarthy transitions to the NFL, Wolverines fans will undoubtedly follow his journey closely. His tenure at Michigan showcased his potential, and now with the Vikings, he has the opportunity to elevate his game even further.
