Breaking: Daniel Jones is riled up and this could be a great… see more

Being a professional athlete can be cruel. One day you’re riding high as a hero and the next you could be viewed as a villain. Right now in the NFL, perhaps nobody exemplifies this quite like New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

It didn’t seem to take long for Jones to go from exalted successor of Eli Manning to somebody fans were eager to exile from East Rutherford. While fickle fandom in New York is par for the course, this seems particularly unfair to Jones. In his five years in the league, he has only played in 60 games. While last year was a disaster in which he suffered two severe injuries (including a torn ACL) the prior season was his best, resulting in a playoff victory.

Yet, Jones continues to be disrespected. There was speculation that the Giants regretted the big contract they gave him. The team talked to Russell Wilson about potentially competing with Jones for the starting position. There were numerous rumors that they’d be taking a quarterback in the draft. He doesn’t seem to have the full confidence of team executives. Some people believe backup Drew Locke should be the starter. And, perhaps most insulting of all, Jones only received a rating of 71 for Madden 25, which somehow doesn’t even put him in the top 32 QBs in the league.

It seems as though Jones has had enough, though. In a joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Aug. 5, the typically mild-mannered QB started a fight. After one play, Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill took exception with Giants center Greg Van Roten and pushed him to the ground. Almost immediately, Jones came over and shoved McNeil in the back, which led to a scuffle. It didn’t take long for Jones to get pulled out of the pile and when he tried to get back in, a coach escorted him to the sideline.

Afterwards, Jones said he was standing up for his teammates and that he liked the “good intensity and competitive spirit.” Coming off ACL surgery, however, not everybody was happy to see him involved in a scrum.

“Daniel was out there with it?” asked Giants edge-rusher Brian Burns when told what happened. “Yeah. I’m going to need him to back up. Let his O-line handle that.” But Burns added that he wasn’t surprised, calling Jones a competitor and fighter.

If Jones doesn’t have a good season, it could very well be his last in New York. While starting a little melee during a practice doesn’t mean much in the long run, the fire he’s showing should be very encouraging to fans and it may signal that he’s ready to prove all the doubters wrong.

Former Pro Bowler could be in danger of losing Giants roster spot

Veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson II signed with the New York Giants in May, but after the G-Men released their first unofficial depth chart as they prepare to host the Detroit Lions in both teams’ preseason openers on Thursday, it appears Robinson’s roster spot may be in danger. No. 6 overall pick Malik Nabers is deservedly listed among the team’s starters and Darius Slayton (the team’s leading receiver in four of the last five seasons) is unsurprisingly listed in the group as well. Promising third-year pro Wan’Dale Robinson and second-year player Jalin Hyatt round out the Giants’ starting wideouts room. Robinson appears not only behind the starting group but is currently the third-stringer in back of Nabers and 25-year-old fourth-year pass-catcher Isaiah Hodgins. The latter has only posted 58 catches for 622 yards and seven touchdowns over 28 games in three seasons, including 21 receptions for 230 yards and three scores last year with New York. A-Rob has produced marginally better numbers than Hodgins since 2021, collecting 105 catches for 1,029 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He had a career-high 69.4% catch percentage during his lone season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, but his targets (49) and receiving yards (280) were the lowest of his career outside of his one-game 2017 campaign. He was also held without a touchdown catch for only the second time of his career. The former second-round pick is nearly one decade removed from his lone Pro Bowl campaign (2015 with the Jacksonville Jaguars), but he’s had sporadic success since then. Robinson spent the first four years of his career with the Jaguars, leading the league in touchdown receptions (14) in 2015. The 30-year-old signed with the Chicago Bears in March 2018 and posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020 to go with 200 catches and 13 touchdowns in the two years combined. The Giants are his fourth team in four years after he played one final season in Chicago in 2021, suiting up for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 and the Steelers in 2023. Some players who spend training camp buried on their squad’s wide receivers’ depth chart eventually find playing time on special teams. The Giants newcomer has hardly been asked to contribute there, though, with just 26 career special teams snaps. His days could be numbered with Big Blue.

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian confirms suspicion about QB Arch Manning ahead of 2024 season

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian confirms suspicion about QB Arch Manning ahead of 2024…

There’s been plenty of speculation this offseason about what Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning’s role will actually be this fall. Manning is locked in as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Quinn Ewers. But Manning obviously isn’t your average No. 2 quarterback. He’s a former five-star recruit who comes from a famous family of highly successful quarterbacks. He’s expected to be a star. And his performance in Texas’ spring game earlier this year did nothing to quell those expectations (Arch passed for 355 yards and three touchdowns in the Longhorns’ spring game). Manning has attempted just five passes as a college quarterback. There’s no doubt that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian wants to get him some more reps during games. And not just because he needs the experience, but because he also brings a running element to the table that Ewers doesn’t. “Arch, the thing about him that I think most people probably don’t give him enough credit for, he is a really good athlete,” said Sarkisian earlier this spring. “He’s big, he’s strong, and he’s fast….Sometimes he’ll lean into using his legs to create explosive plays.” CBS Sports suggested earlier this spring that Sarkisian should create a red zone package for Manning, much like Florida did with Tim Tebow in 2006. But despite the need for more reps and the explosive running ability that Manning brings, it sounds like Sarkisian won’t be forcing the young quarterback into the game plan early in the season. Sark was asked on Monday if he wants to get Manning some snaps in September. “Of course I do,” said Sarkisian. When asked if he’ll force it with Manning, Sarkisian responded simply by saying “no”. So it sounds like Manning will be treated just like any other backup quarterback in the nation. If Texas is winning in blowout fashion, we’ll probably see Manning come into the game. Otherwise, it’s going to be the Quinn Ewers show in Austin.

What signing of All-Star Lauri Markkanen means for Jazz

Lauri Markkanen isn’t going anywhere. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the All-Star forward has signed a five-year, $238M contract extension with the Utah Jazz. By holding onto Markkanen, the Jazz are signaling their belief in a young core that features recent first-round picks Cody Williams and Isaiah Collier. With the allure of the play-in tournament, the Jazz could be eyeing a future as the 10th seed in the playoffs, where the young and offensively talented team could be dangerous. Utah (31-51) finished 12th in the Western Conference last season and did not make the postseason. This offseason, Markkanen — the NBA’s 2022-2023 Most Improved Player — had been connected to the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors. Markkanen has significantly improved in his two seasons with Utah, where he has averaged 24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. In the five previous seasons before his trade to the Jazz from Cleveland, he never averaged more than 18.7 points. Despite showing promise early in his career, Markkanen never clicked with the Chicago Bulls, who acquired him after he was drafted by Minnesota with the seventh overall pick in 2017. (He never played for the Timberwolves.) In his four seasons with Chicago, he averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds and shot .509 from the floor. In August 2021, Markkanen signed a multi-year contract as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played one season for the Cavs before his trade to the Jazz as part of the Donovan Mitchell deal in September 2022. Even with the strong play of Markkanen, the Jazz have struggled since last making the playoffs in 2021-22. Offensively, the Jazz finished 11th last season in scoring, averaging 115.7 points. However, the team struggled mightily on defense, surrendering 120.5 PPG, the second-worst figure in the league. With Markkanen back in the fold, the Jazz have a better chance to make the playoffs and to improve defensively.

Orioles’ Jackson Holliday is hitting the ball harder than all but one player since call-up

MLB

Orioles’ Jackson Holliday is hitting the ball harder than all but one player since call-up

It’s a small sample size, but rookie second baseman Jackson Holliday has been on fire since being recalled to the Baltimore Orioles. The former No. 1 overall pick was promoted on July 31 and there’s only one player in MLB who’s been hitting the ball harder than Holliday since then. Since a slow April, New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has arguably been the best hitter in the league. Judge is one of the AL MVP front-runners along with teammate Juan Soto and Holliday’s double play partner — shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Trade rumors surrounded Detroit Tigers AL Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal — often connecting him to the Orioles — and Holliday was frequently floated as a possible piece going to the Motor City in a potential trade. Baltimore instead landed one-time All-Star starting pitcher Trevor Rogers and starting pitcher Zach Eflin in separate deals, and with second baseman Connor Norby shipping out of town, the starting job was cleared for Holliday. The son of former All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday lit up minor league pitching since being drafted in 2022 and recorded 10 home runs, 38 RBI and eight stolen bases with a .271/.431/.477 slash line over 266 at-bats in 73 games with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides in 2024. Those numbers didn’t carry over in Jackson’s first taste of the big leagues, however, as he went just 2-for-34 with five runs scored, one RBI, two walks and 18 strikeouts across his first 10 games with Baltimore. The 20-year-old hit a grand slam in his first game back with the Orioles last Tuesday and hasn’t cooled off yet.
