REPORT: Alvaro Morata defended by Luis de la Fuente as Spain boss claims misunderstood’ AC Milan striker would…..see more

Alvaro Morata has been defended by Luis de la Fuente as the Spain boss believes the “misunderstood” striker would be a “legend” in “another country”.

The former Real Madrid star endured a challenging evening during Spain’s 3-3 draw against Brazil in a friendly match at Santiago Bernabeu, back in March. His frustration was palpable and when he was substituted in the 81st minute a portion of the fans in the stadium jeered as he left the field, expressing their displeasure at his inability to find the back of the net.

Although Spain went on to win the European Championship in the summer, Morata looked lacklustre and could muster just one goal and an assist in seven appearances. There was also talk that the striker could quit international football.

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Morata’s future, Luis de la Fuente remains one of his most vocal supporters and quashed retirement talks. Speaking on Carlos Latre’s programme, De la Fuente emphasized the importance of Morata to the national team and urged the entire country to recognize and celebrate his contributions.

“Yes, yes, he’s still here and I’m celebrating, the whole of Spain should be celebrating,” De la Fuente stated emphatically.

“Morata is greatly misunderstood in this national team. With the career he has, in another country he would be a footballing legend, but unfortunately, here you have to be fighting against I don’t know what because it’s difficult for him to be recognised. I’m sure he’s going to stay with us as long as he wants and I hope he gets the media and public recognition he has earned with great success and hard work. ”

In the summer, Morata completed a move to AC Milan, where he will be teaming up with USMNT star Christian Pulisic in the attack. He signed a four-year contract with the Italian giants, with an option for an additional year, ensuring his stay at the San Siro until at least 2028 after the Rossoneri activated Morata’s €15 million (£12.64m/$16.3 million) release clause at Atletico Madrid.

Morata’s move to Milan got off to a promising start as he scored in the team’s opening match of the Serie A campaign against Torino. However, just as things were beginning to look up, Morata suffered a setback and is now facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury, which could keep him out of action for three weeks.
