David Silva: Former Manchester City playmaker retires from football

David Silva, a former playmaker for Manchester City, has declared his retirement from the game.

Before joining Real Sociedad in 2020, the 37-year-old Spanish great enjoyed a fruitful ten years at City, where he won four Premier League championships.

However, Silva opted to end his 19-year playing career after suffering a significant knee injury during the preseason.

Silva posted on social media that “today is a sad day for me.”

“Today is the day to part ways with what I have devoted my entire life to. It’s time for me to say goodbye to my coworkers, who I think of as family. You will be greatly missed by me.

The former international for Spain moved to City from Valencia in 2010 and made 436 appearances while scoring 77 goals for the team.

A statue of Silva was installed outside the Etihad Stadium in 2021, standing beside those of fellow


club heroes Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero. Silva was a tremendously popular player at City, with outstanding vision and attacking flair.

He assisted City in winning two FA Cups and five League Cups in addition to the four Premier League championships.

Silva retired from Spain service in 2018 after winning the 2008, 2012, and 2010 European Championships.
