AC Milan’s two goals against Inter on Sunday night to win the derby makes them the highest scorers in Serie A, and Paulo Fonseca can smile at how spread the attacking threat is.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write this morning, Milan not only have the most goals in the league this season but also the highest number of different scorers. Fonseca’s idea of attacking football is shown in the fact that his side have scored in every game they have played this season.
Milan have scored in many different ways too: Alvaro Morata scored his first goal of the season against Torino with a redirect, Noah Okafor smacked in a volley, while Strahinja Pavlovic scored a header from a set piece against Lazio (as Matteo Gabbia did against Inter).
There were two goals from penalties in the Venezia game, plus one where Theo Hernandez squeezed a shot in after a nice combination with Rafael Leao, and Youssouf Fofana also was credited with diverting in a corner. Christian Pulisic has a tap-in and a goal after a driving run to his name as well.
Speaking of Pulisic, when counting all competitions he has scored in three consecutive matches, and from the beginning of March to today nobody has matched his eight goals in Serie A. The American, like Milan, scores against small and big teams.
Among Fonseca’s intentions is to make Leao a consistent and increasingly incisive player. The winger assisted Pulisic’s goal in Parma, but at the same time he started the counter-attack that led to the opponent’s winner with a slack pass.
Leao scored against Lazio after starting from the bench, guilty of poor commitment in the previous matches. Against Venezia he provided great backheel that set up Hernandez to score, but in the derby he appeared and disappeared again.
He is an intermittent 10: and Fonseca’s next goal is to make him increasingly involved. Also waiting for Okafor and above all Samuel Chukwueze, the star of the pre-season who is yet to score but should have had an assist in the derby.
