Breaking News: Tennessee’s projected first-round CFP game is set to be thrilling at Neyland Stadium…. see more

The College Football Playoff (CFP) committee released its first rankings ahead of Week 11, and Tennessee, which was expected to rank around No. 10, surprised many by landing at No. 7. This position gives the Vols a chance to host a first-round game in the newly expanded 12-team playoff format.

If the rankings hold, Tennessee would face Indiana in the opening round at Neyland Stadium, promising an exciting matchup in front of a packed crowd. The game would feature Indiana’s high-powered offense against Tennessee’s elite defense, making it one of the most intriguing matchups of the first round.

Indiana, under first-year head coach Curt Cignetti, is one of the hottest teams in college football, and Cignetti has quickly reshaped the Hoosiers into a formidable force. This clash against one of the nation’s top defenses will present a unique challenge for Indiana.

Other first-round matchups include No. 12 Boise State vs. No. 5 Ohio State, No. 11 Alabama vs. Texas, and No. 10 Notre Dame vs. No. 7 Penn State. Oregon is the top seed, followed by Georgia, Miami, and BYU.

Tennessee’s defense, traditionally one of the best in the country, will play a key role against Indiana’s explosive offense. While Tennessee is usually known for its dynamic offense, the Vols have struggled this season under redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava. However, their offense has been improving steadily, and if it continues to develop, Tennessee could be in prime form heading into the Playoff, with an offense capable of matching Indiana’s firepower and a defense poised to shut down the Hoosiers.

Tennessee’s playoff future will depend on their performance this weekend against Mississippi State, as they look to secure a spot and possibly host the first-round matchup with Indiana.
