When the Portuguese coach arrived at Milan, there were a lot of questions about the appointment, but his initial press conferences seemed to bring some positive optimism to things. However, six months later, the initial doubters were proved right.

Fonseca’s football lacked the core characteristics that he had promised on arrival, and as a result, the Rossoneri were forced into making a decision mid-way through the season.

Now, the coach has moved back to France, where he was previously so successful, and in his opening press conference, he has made similar promises to the Lyon fans, as Milan News relays.

“When we are at a club like Lyon, we have to be ambitious. It is a good team with good players. I believe a lot in these players and I am very motivated. It was an easy choice because I know the history of Lyon, I know the team.

“I am very motivated to coach these players and this team. Lyon is a great club with excellent facilities. Also, I had a very interesting conversation with John Textor. He is very ambitious and so am I. It is easy to be motivated when John Textor, who represents Lyon, talks to you and explains what he wants for the future of the team.”

On the game…

“I think that with these players we can play offensive football because we have quality. It is true that we will need time, but I am very confident. For us, winning is the main objective, but also playing well and practising offensive football, dominating the game. I strongly believe in that.”

Whether he is more able to show his football back in France remains to be seen, but if Lyon’s fortunes improve, it could lead to questions about the circumstances in Italy.
